Right to Integrity

About this right

All people have the right to respect for their physical, mental and moral integrity, according to the American Convention on Human Rights (Art. 5). This means that no one should be subjected to acts or omissions that affect or damage the human body, mental integrity or human dignity.

The State is obliged to guarantee this right in all circumstances and to ensure that its officials and authorities respect it, without exceptions of any kind. Therefore, torture - physical and psychological - and any kind of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment are absolutely prohibited.

The right to personal integrity is a fundamental right of a non – derogable nature, without which it is impossible to speak of a dignified life.
