Right to full compensation for victims

About this right

All victims of serious human rights violations and violations of international humanitarian rights have the right to reparation proportionate to the harm suffered. According to the United Nations, full and effective reparation implies in all cases restitution, compensation, rehabilitation, satisfaction and guarantees of non-repetition for each victim (UN Resolution 60/147, 2005).

Currently, despite the recommendations of international bodies, El Salvador does not have its own legislation on the right to full compensation, which is why all the victims of the Salvadoran civil war (1980-1992) are still pending compensation. On the other hand, victims of current crimes receive reparation only in the form of economic compensation or indemnification.
